What I find so irritating about Mr. Bush isn't his anti-enviromental policies, nor his tax policies designed to benefit the rich. It's his cynical way of packaging his plans.
What do you call his idea to cut down our forests, so that loggers can profit? It's the "Healthy Forests" iniative. What do you call the plan to remove regulation of factories? That's the "Clean Skies" act.
Whenever you see a picture of President Bush in the newspaper, he is standing in front of a banner that explains his goals. "Economic Security," it might say. Or "Education Matters". But the truth is that it's all about marketing. Hopefully the American people are not so easily fooled.
Let me just offer some examples. According to Mr. Bush, one of his major programs is the "Leave No Child Behind Act". This program mandates an aggressive testing program, which I personally disagree with. I don't see why it makes sense to have schoolchildren constantly being tested. But that's another matter. The important issue is that Mr. Bush outlined an expensive piece of legislation- but he did not really allocate the money to pay for it. Instead, he asks the states to pay for it. And, with the states experiencing large deficits, it seems doubtful that this approach will have positive results. For more details, look here. You will see that Mr. Bush slashed the educational budget for many programs, froze many others. His particular targets were special education, and education for homeless children.
