No, I'm not a relationship counselor. But I have some thoughts
that may be intriguing about long-distance relationships.
By the way, have you ever noticed
that no one ever says, "I have a short-distance relationship". I guess
its assumed that most relationships are short-distance.
Actually its necessary to classify long-distance relationships,
because there are different types! For example, there is the
Internet romance, where the people may not have even met. And
there is the college situation, where they may head to different
places for the summer.
Here's the situation I'm looking at: two people date, then one person
moves away, maybe because of a job. That's pretty common, I would
think, especially in today's mobile society.
Long-distance relationships involve a lot of phone calls.
I'm usually not a chap that talks a lot on the phone...but
now I'm up to an hour per day! And maybe it involves airline trips,
and short visits. It's all a little unsatisfying, actually.
A phone call doesn't replace a walk in the park!
Interestingly, though, there may be certain advantages to a long-distance
relationship. Maybe you took someone for granted? Now it's a
chance to test that out. You can get to know someone better,
too. If they come to visit for a few days, that will
be a lot more intense than the usual Friday night date!
Anyways, soon you learn that the situation is unstable.
Just too much work to keep the whole thing going. It's time
to make a decision. Clearly, either the distance must be
modified, or one should give up on the whole thing.
It's sort of ironic that way, because the whole reason you chose
to have a long-distance relationship is because you didn't feel
like making any decision at all. But the long-distance relationship
was no solution. So a long-distance relationship may last
a few months, but eventually you will just get frustrated with it.
And frustration is not a bad thing, actually. Without frustration,
we would have no motivation to change anything.
And making decisions is not a bad thing, too.
In this world, people do
have to make decisions. Right, left, up, down. Spaghetti or pizza.
These are the decisions we must make each and every day!
Without action...we are just drifting. N'est-ce pas?
