No Football Stadium in LA!
Recently, politicians and businessmen have been discussing having a new stadium in L.A. The NFL
is also interested in having a team in L.A.
I firmly oppose a new football stadium. Los Angeles has no need for such a stadium.
A football stadium is really a drain on the taxpayer. When a football stadium is built, who
pays the money? That's right, the taxpayer. The cost for such a stadium would easily reach
$1 billion. In a time when we are laying off teachers, why would we want to spend $1
billion for a gleaming new stadium. Some businessmen say that they will pay for the stadium,
but the catch is that they want the area to be a tax-free zone. A tax-free zone in the middle
of the city will effectively cost billions of dollars/
So the cost is enormous. Let's examine the benefits that a football
stadium can offer. For people who enjoy football, they can go see football games.
This is a richer class of people. Since a typical stadium can hold 70,000, we can
see that the football stadium represents a benefit for 70,000 people in a city of 12
million. So only a small fraction of people would get to see this game.
Everyone else will be watching the game on TV. Well, I can watch football games on TV
right now. In fact, fortunately there is not a team in LA, so I get to watch any
game that I want, instead of having to watch the LA game.
I enjoy watching TV at home more than going to the game, because I don't have to spend time
with a lot of drunken idiots. (whoops- am I sounding like a cynic?)
Actually, I think we should reconsider the current system of football.
Currently, there are 25 NFL teams. Each team spends hundreds of millions
to buy this useless stadium. Why is a stadium useless? Because there are 12 football
games per year. It's not a multipurpose facility, so at other times,
the football stadium sits empty. Just taking up space. Anyways, my proposal is
that we build 1 national football stadium in Iowa. Then, all football games will
be played in Iowa. We can still have teams named "St Louis" and "Los Angeles". Since most
people watch football on TV, they won't really care. Then, in Iowa. we will have 70,000 fans
that just watch football games. That's their job.
Anyways back to the arguments. So far we have established that a football stadium is
extremely expensive, and benefits a small amount of people. Let me also note that a football
stadium creates a few low paying jobs. Another benefit of football is that it will
put your town on the map. Does LA need to be put on the map? I don't think so!
Does football create civic spirit? I don't really think so. Frankly speaking,
civic spirit is vastly overrated.
So basically, this football stadium is being pushed on LA by people with a lot
of money, who really want to rip off the taxpayer. I'm calling on Los Angeles voters
to act like a football team. When you vote in November, be sure to block that stadium!
