Vote Gray Davis!
I am giving my endorsement to Gray Davis, and I can recommend
that you vote for Gray Davis in the 2002 California gubernational
election.
To see the website of Gray Davis, go
here. You will see that Gray Davis has fought against offshore
oil drilling. This is an issue that most Californians will agree
on. Who wants offshore oil drilling to ruin the coast?
The subtext to the offshore oil drilling debate is that President
Bush has not offered California the same protection against
offshore oil drilling as President Bush has offered Florida. In this
case, President Bush seeks to support Florida Governor Jeb Bush,
while deposing California Governor Gray Davis. Pretty cynical!
If Republican candidate Bill Simon is elected, Bush will gain substantial
power. He will use California as a machine to further his 2004 prospects.
So, a vote for Bill Simon is definitely a vote for President Bush.
Another issue which Gray Davis really did well on is enforcing stricter
standards for automobile pollution. In July 2002, Gray Davis signed
a bill that will essentially force automakers to increase the miles
per gallons of their cars. This will have the effect of improving
the efficiency of cars across the nation! Really a very impressive
bill.
Opposing Gray Davis is
Republican Bill Simon. Bill Simon's campaign
has been a farce. He has changed his advisors numerous times. Simon
has refused to release his taxes. And, if that weren't enough,
Bill Simon got hit with a $78 million dollar corporate fraud judgement
in the middle of his campaign. Things are looking so bad that Dick
Cheney did not mention Simon in his visit to California. The death
knell on Simon's campaign is expected later in August 2002, when Bush
was scheduled to visit California. If Bush reschedules his visit
to avoid being associated with Simon, then it will be the end of
Simon's campaign.
Let me conclude this article by saying that there are things about
Davis that I find troubling. Davis started his career as California
governor by committing California to hundreds of billions of dollars
of long-term energy contracts. These contracts were later found
to be unnecessary. They are responsible for California's budget crisis.
It's really a scandal, although it has been found that these
companies acted fraudulently.
Another thing that bothers me about Davis is the way that he influenced
the Republican primary. Davis ran attack ads against Republican
candidate Riordan, causing Riordan to lose, and Simon to win. Is this
fair play? I'm not sure.
Is Gray Davis my favorite politician? Unfortunately, he isn't. But
Gray Davis does have a commitment to the enviroment, and to working
families, and other issues that I support fully. And Gray Davis is
making a career out of standing up to President Bush. That's something
that I think California needs. Let's support Gray Davis, and help
him improve California's enviroment and economy.
